Adam Selman is a name you may not yet know. Though unless you’ve hidden under a rock for the past year, you’ve likely seen his handywork. When Rihanna needs a leopard print bustier, he’s there. When she needs a back-up dress for the VMA’s, there he’ll be: needle, thread and boob tape in tow. He’s her costume designer. And when it comes to the mega fashion force that is Rihanna, it’s he and stylist Mel Ottenberg that craft her looks.

If you look closely at backstage photos of Rihanna, you’ll spot him. He’s often tweaking, her moments before she steps on stage. He’s like the stage mother, shoving his very own made-up,adorned down kid on stage for the world to see. The man behind the woman whose musical reign just won’t let up talks panties, kitten heels and what it’s like working with Queen Ri.

Where do the ideas for Rihanna’s costumes begin?

For the Loud tour I was super inspired by the photographer Cheyco Leidmann—all of those bright poppy colors he used in his work him and early David LaChapelle. Throughout the Loud tour, Debbie Harry also played a huge role.

And what about for The 777 Tour?
For 777 things had to be quick and transition from stage, to going out at night then to the plane. It was all about custom bras and that jet set lifestyle. It all kind of transitioned into this Debbie-Harry-meets-Tupac thing, like with the jersey other men’s pieces. A lot of menswear was involved.

What was the 777 Tour like?
It was a trip! I’ve done tours and worked some crazy jobs and hours, but this one was a whole new beast! Bags were lost, everything was late, everyone was cranky. But we managed to have some good times in the process. I’ve never experienced press like that either and I’ve hardly given any interviews, I was afraid to go to the back of the plane! Cameras were on 24/7, microphones were out at all times. I don’t think the back of the plane ever slept.

Rihanna performed with Coldplay (Mylo Xyloto tour) during a beautiful piano ballad of “Umbrella” in Paris, France. Spotted wearing a church embroidery detailed black dress by KTZ from their autumn/winter collection (which is not currently available at this time).

For the Princess of China look, her stripe red dress was custom made by her frequent designer Adam Selman and styled by Mel Ottenberg. She completed her look by wearing a pair of rocking horse boots by Vivienne Westwood and earrings by Johanne Mills.

UPDATE: Rihanna was also spotted wearing a pair of fringe detail combat boots by costume national available from Barneys.com for £895.

Topshop has a similar pair of fringe boots for £95.00 ($190.00)

Rihanna was seen leaving her hotel wearing a green biker leather jacket by Alexander Mcqueen. Rihanna wore this jacket two weeks ago in Los Angeles after having dinner at Giorgio Baldi in Santa Monica. Her dress is by Opening Ceremony, cap by Patrik Ervell and her necklace is by Katie Eary.

Rihanna doing a shoot in Barbados she wore a custom halter neck wrap dress by her frequent designer Adam Selman. This piece was specially made for this shoot. The dress and colour very well reflects the theme of the up coming campaign.

She changed on to wear a bikini top by L*space worn with a pair of vintage Levi cut off shorts and a Kenzo patterned cap from the spring/summer 2012 collection.

And lastly Rihanna wore this gorgeous vintage dress by NYC based brand Narnia

She also wore a multi coloured (Barbados flag coloured) dress by Adam Selman too.

Rihanna during the love and peace festival held in Sweden. Still sticking to the Egyptian theme she wore the same leather vintage jacket worn with a turban and skirt customised by Adam Selman. She wore a bra top also by Adam and customised by Claire Barrow, who has worked with Rihanna during her LOUD tour and custom painted her leather jacket for Talk that Talk photoshoot.

Rihanna performed in Oslo, Norway, at Kollen Festival wearing a leather cap by Michael Schmidt, including a customized jacket and by Adam Selman. Over her red bra, Rihanna wore a chain print racerback klum jumpsuit is by Aqua by Aqua , that is currently  online for purchase for $69.00.
